CHS Educational Foundation adds five to its Hall of Fame
Apr 20, 2018Three medically-connected Conwayites, Hilda J. Johnson, Dr. Winston Dowd McIver Jr. and Marshall Craig Sasser became the 43rd, 44th and 45th outstanding alumni added to the meritorious list. Grace Tanner and the late Robert Louis Laney Sr. were the 33rd and 34th educators to be included in the educators’ honor roll.Hilda JohnsonFred Lewis, who introduced Hilda James Johnson, said the former director of radiology at Conway Medical Center brought the hospital’s imaging department into the modern era kicking and screaming. Lewis said Johnson is a member of Juniper Bay Baptist Church where she works with senior adult ministry.He said she is a Christian who never falters in her faith and who dedicated 44 years of service to the hospital and the citizens of Conway. He said she greatly expanded the department and was responsible for implementing digital mammography before she retired. According to Lewis, Johnson did such a good job that the new outpatient mammography facility bears her name.Lewis said CMC was the first in South Carolina to meet the radiological ISO certification process, which caused it to become a pilot program for the rest of the state.He said Johnson has a distinctive walk and was obsessed with cleanliness and orderliness, even noting every mark on the floor.“If she had something to talk to you about she asked ‘do you have a patient?’ ” he said because patients were always her first priority.Lewis said Johnson once caught him with his feet on his desk before pursing her lips and reprimanding him in the kindest way, asking him what kind of example he was setting.“I got her point without her losing her cool,” he said.Johnson graduated from Conway High School in 1963 and from the hospital’s radiology program the next year.She also served on the advisory board for Horry Georgetown Technical College and helped form its radiology technology department.She and her husband Grant had two daughters and two grandchildren.
